Desayunamos rapido en el Best Western Rail Haven, hotel historico en la ruta 66 en el que el servicio no tiene las habitaciones listas hasta las 10 de la noche! y nos echamos a la carretera dispuestos a saltarnos mas peajes.

Habiamos oido hablar mucho de Tulsa en la serie Friends y teniamos mucha ilusion por visitarla. Seria por ser domingo pero es una ciudad fantasma aunque eso si, con un centro financiero de edificios arquitectonicamente impresionantes.

En la habitacion del hotel de Oklahoma hemos pasado 15 minutos buscando la segunda cama.  Las camas en los EEUU son tamaño gigante pero los 4 durmiendo en una sola  nos parecia un poco excesivo, asi que tiramos los dados a ver quien dormia en el suelo. La falta de camas de la habitación se compensaba con las vistas al estadio de baseball. Al final decidimos bajar a recepción a protestar y ya tenemos bien aprendida la lección cuando hagamos las reservas.  Le debimos dar mucha pena al señor de reception porque nos cambió a una suite con 2 camas, 2 sofas-camas, 2 baños  y cocina.

Dimos un paseo por los canales de Oklahoma parando a tomar unas cervezas y fumarnos unos puros, la cena en un restaurante (Flint) a la altura de viajeros que se alojan en suites.








Quick breakfast in the Best Western Rail Haven, historic hotel in Route 66 where the service doesn't have the rooms ready until 10pm! and we started driving ready to violate some more tolls in the motorway.  

We had heard a lot about Tulsa in the TV programme Friends and we were really looking foward visiting it. Maybe because it was Sunday, Tulsa was a ghost town, but the financial district had arquitecturally impressive buildings.

In the hotel room in Oklahoma we spent 15 minutes looking for the second bed. In the USA bed sizes are gigantic but we thought 4 people sleeping in one bed was excessive so we threw the dice to see who was going to sleep on the floor. The room lacked beds but made up for it with the views into the baseball stadium. Eventually we went to reception to complain and from now on we make the bookings we are ensuring the rooms have the required number of beds. The receptionist felt sorry for us and upgraded our room to a suite with 2 beds, 2 sofa-beds, 2 toilets and a kitchen.

We enjoyed a walk in the Oklahoma canals in Bricktown and we stopped for beers and cigars. Dinner in a restaurant (Flint) as posh as the travellers staying in hotel suites.

A nosotros no nos han secuestrado como al senor de arriba, hemos venido voluntariamente a St Louis pero esta ciudad nos ha dado un poco de miedito.... No nos hemos atrevido a entrar a desayunar en al cafeteria que nos ha recomendado el botones y en su lugar hemos preferido pagar por el desayuno depurativo del hotel (desayuno sin huevos).

We have not been kidnapped like the chap above. We have come voluntarily to St Louis but this city has scared us a little bit... We have not dare entering to have breakfast in the coffee shop recompensed by the hotel bellboy and we have paid for the detox breakfast in the hotel (eggs free breakfast).

La ruta  hoy la hemos comenzado con Thelma & Louise de rally por el Meramec State Park en busca de Jesse James. Aqui, Louise se ha cortado la coleta y ha ofrecido una faena donde ha demostrado su templanza y nervios de acero. En las cuevas de Meremac hemos hecho tour en el que estaban incluidos dos espectaculos de luz y sonido a cargo del DJ Jeremiah.

The route has started today with Thelma & Louise taking us for a rally in Meremac State Park in pursuit of Jesse James. At the wheel, Louise has graduated with honors showing confidence and balls of steel. In the Meramec caves we have joined a tour which included two light and music shows by DJ Jeremiah.

 

En la carretera es dificil decidir en que atracciones parar: museo de la aspiradora, tiendas descuento de armas, puesto comercial de mulas, carreras de avestruces; tantas para ver y solo tenemos 21 dias. Por ser el cumpleaños de Bonnie hemos elegido ir a pegar unos tiros de pintura para celebrarlo. Como no podia ser de otra manera, los locales nos han masacrado. Menos mal que he traido un botiquin bien surtido porque hemos tenido que pasar la tarde curando heridas en una lavanderia (no nos han dado mono).

On the road it is difficult to decide in which road attractions to stop: vacuum museum, weaponry outlets, mule trading post, ostrich races; so many to see and we only have 21 days. To celebrate Bonnie's birthday we have chosen to shoot some paintballs. I don't think it will be a surprise to no one that the locals massacred us. Good thing I brought a well stocked first aid kit because we spent the rest of the afternoon tending our wounds in a laundromat (we were not given overalls).

No parecia que Sprinfield iba a ser mas animado que St Louis pero hemos tenido la suerte de que el pueblo estaba en fiestas. En la plaza mayor tenian una orquesta y puestos de comida y bebida para celebrar el octoberfest.

Springfield didn't look any more lively than St Louis but when we got to the main square they were celebrating octoberfest with live music and food and drink stalls.

Salimos temprano de Chicago y comenzamos oficialmente la Ruta 66. Hubo miedos infundados por estilo de conduccion Bonnie & Clyde pero conseguimos llegar intactos a Lincolnlandia (Springfield, Illinois).

We left early Chicago and we started officially the Route 66. There were unfounded fears because of the driving style of Bonnie & Clyde but we got unharmed to Lincolnland (Springfield, Illinois).

Springfield ha sido una parada en boxes sorpresa que nos ha gustado bastante y nos ha salvado de pasar mas tiempo en St. Louis.

Hemos visitado el antiguo capitolio del estado de Illinois y la tumba de Abbe. Nos queda pendiente ver un par de peliculas para profundizar en por que este señor fue tan importante y por que cazaba vampiros. La comida, en un restaurante con un chef marimandon en el que por un precio muy barato no se podia elegir ni comida ni bebida.

Springfield has been a surprise pit stop that we have enjoyed a lot and has saved us from spending too much time in St Louis. We have visited the old State Capitol of Illinois and Abbe's Tomb. We need watching a couple of movies to learn why this lad was so important and why he hunted vampires. The meal, in a restaurant with a bossy Chef where for a very cheap price we couldn't choose the food or the drink.

Reiniciamos la marcha y llegamos a nuestro Castillo Hotel Disney en St. Louis.

De camino a ver el Mississippi confirmamos que esta ciudad se merece estar en la lista del FBI  de las 10 mas peligrosas. Los nativos se recogieron tras la derrota de los Cardinals dando a la ciudad un toque desolador. Menos mal que nos volvio a salvar un bar irlandes con su moquetita. Bonnie and Thelma consiguieron no caer en la tentacion de comerse una hamburguesa y todavia conservan intacta su virginidad.

We returned to the road  and we arrived to our Disney Castle Hotel in St Louis. On our way to see the Mississippi river we confirmed that this city deserves to be in the FBI's list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the USA. The locals disappeared after the Cardinals lost the game and the city looked completely deserted. Luckily we found yet again another Irish pub with that comforting carpet. Bonnie and Thelma have managed not to fall for the temptation and are still burger virgins.

A la 1 de la madrugada empezo a sonar la alarma de incendios mientras una voz por megafonia decia que nos quedaramos en la habitacion que creia que no pasaba nada pero que lo estaban comprobando. Hubiera sido un detalle que lo hubieran comprobado antes de despertar a todo el hotel, aunque ahora ya sabemos que el entrenamiento militar en casa de Louise le ha preparado para cualquier emergencia.

At 1 am the fire alarm went off while someone in the hotel speakers were telling us to stay in the room because they thought it was nothing but that they were checking. It would have been nice to check before waking everybody, although now we know that the army training Louise gets at home it's working.

chicago dia 3 (guest blogger)

Tercer dia en Chicago y se antoja un dia con tiempo ingles, que si ahora lluvia que si ahora sol, eso si, con calor sofocante. Hemos tenido que comprarnos un paraguas como no, en una farmacia que cualquier excusa es buena para seguir maravillandonos de los articulos que se venden aqui.

Tras desayunar en Louis Mitchell, en la calle donde empieza la ruta 66, hemos visitado la zona del acuario y el planetario, y a pesar de no enterarnos de como funciona el transporte publico finalmente hemos conseguido llegar a la zona norte de la ciudad.

Third day in Chicago and putting up with an English weather, raining on and off but with temperatures over 25 degrees. We had to buy an umbrella and the best place to buy it, as anything else is a 24h Pharmacy. Any excuse to visit a pharmacy and wonder about the variety of items sold. After having breakfast in Louis Mitchell in the street where the route 66 starts we have walked around the aquarium and the planetarium and although we have struggled to understand the public transport in this city we have made it to the north of the city.

En el norte de la ciudad esta el Lincoln park del que nos hemos quedado prendados, equipos mixtos jugando a futbol americano, un par de equipos jugando a beisbol y atencion, un grupo de niños jugando al soccer.

In the north of the city the Lincoln park is a massive space for people to play sports, mixed teams playing american football,  baseball and even a children´s soccer match.

No podiamos abandonar Chicago sin visitar Second City, si la ciudad es famosa por algo es por sus monologos y festivales de improvisacion. De este teatro han salido humoristas como Billy Murray o Steve Carrell. Nos hemos decantado por el espectaculo de Ian Bagg, totalmente improvisado, facil de entender, con muchas pero muchas carcajadas y con la ansiedad de ser elegido entre el publico para ser el blanco de sus chistes. Afortunadamente nos hemos salvado y se ha cebado con unos turistas turcos.
We could not leave Chicago without going to a comedy club. Second city is the place where people like Bill Murray or Steve Carrell started. We went to the  Ian Bagg show and was fun, lots of laughs and highly stressful as anyone in the public could be the the butt of his jokes. Thankfully his picked on two turkish lads.

Chicago dia 2

Empezamos el dia con un contundente desayuno: huevos, bacon y patatas; que aunque parecido al desayuno ingles, tiene sus diferencias. Te preguntan como quieres de hechos los huevos, en inglaterra, igual que con la carne, solo los puede pedir muy hechos. Tambien varia el numero de huevos, ni 1 ni 2, te plantan 4!

We have started the day with a massive breakfast: eggs, bacon and hash browns; and although similar to the English breakfast, there are some differences.You can choose how cooked you want your eggs, which in England just like your meat can only be well done. And you dont get 1 or 2 eggs, you get 4!

A continuacion hemos hecho un crucero por el rio Chicago y el Lago Michigan, donde nos han explicado la historia y anedoctas de los edificios mas importantes de la ciudad.
Next we have taken a cruise in the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, where we have been explained the history and anecdotes of the most important buildings in the city.

De momento el acento de Chicago se nos esta dando de maravilla, eso si, les cuesta unos segundos entendernos la primera vez que abrimos la boca. Les puedes leer en la cara la confusion que les provoca que con nuestros looks chicanos tengamos acento scouse.
So far we understand perfeclty well the Chicagoan accent but it takes them a few seconds to understand us the first time we speak. You can see the confusion in their faces when with our latino looks we speak with a scouse accent.

Como el tiempo era tan bueno hemos comido en el parque del milenio unos bocatas comprados en una farmacia. Hemos tenido que entrar varias veces en las farmacias porque no podiamos creer que vendieran tabaco y alcohol en ellas! Tambien es dificil de creer la cantidad de fiambre que  ponen en los bocatas.
The weather was really sunny so we have gone to eat some sandwiches bought in a pharmacy in the Millenium Park . We had to enter in pharmacies several times to believe they were really selling alcohol and tobacco. It is also difficult to believe the amount of meat they put in the sandwiches.

Nuestra siguiente parada ha sido el Instituto de Arte de Chicago donde hemos visto a Diane Keaton!!! Nuestro primer famoso y todavia no hemos llegado a Los Angeles.
Our next stop has been the Art Institute of Chicago where we have seen Diane Keaton!!! Our first celebrity and we are not yet in Los Angeles.

A continuacion hemos vagado penosamente por la ciudad, sin decidirnos por ningun concierto o teatro hasta acabar en un bar donde por lo menos habia musica en directo. Hemos finalizado el dia con una pizza estilo Chicago, lo que nosotros siempre habiamos llamado quiche.
Afterwards we have  pathetically wandering the city without agreeing on any concert or theatre until we have end up in a bar where luckily there was live music. The day has finished with a Chicago style pizza, which we had always known as quiche.

Chicago Dia 1

Habia muchos planes en Chicago en nuestra primera tarde pero por precio o por cansancio no han salido. Tras mojarnos los pies en el Lago Michigan hemos intentado conseguir entradas para el partido de los Blackhawks pero nos pedian $500 y el plan B, un pub crawl para celebrar Oktoberfest nos ha visto apalancarnos en un bar irlandes de camino a comprar los tickets, en el que Jordi y Paco se han visto acosados por una borracha.

We had many plans for our first afternoon in Chicago but price and tiredness have stopped us doing them. After getting our feet wet in Lake Michigan we have tried to get tickets for the Blackhawks match but we were asked for $500. We did not make it to plan B, a pub crawl to celebrate Oktoberfest, spending the evening instead, in an Irish pub where Jordi and Paco were harassed by the resident drunk woman.

Up in the air

Volando con American  Airlines en clase turista nos hemos topado con el primer contratiempo.... no hay pantalla individual para ver peliculas o series a tu eleccion. Pablo todavia no ha superado no poder jugar al poker con RaFalo. Pero la comida................ le doy un 10,  a la bebida...... le hemos dado....... y mucho. Cerveza, vino y como hemos acabado existencias, tambien champan. Las 2 primeras horas de vuelo han sido un poco empacho para mi  y si las porciones de una comida de avion me pueden, voy a explotar con las porciones extra grandes de los EEUU.

Flying tourist with American Airlines we have encountered our first inconvenience.....there is no individual screen to watch the films or tv programmes of your choice. Pablo is still moaning about not being able to play poker with RaFalo (wordplay with the name Rafa and one part of the male anatomy). But the food was a 10 and the drinks..... we definitely had more than that. Beer, wine and after finishing with supplies, champagne. Two hours into the flight and I am so full, if I cannot cope with the inflight portions what are the supersize USA portions going to do to me.
